What this site is
RarePetCare publishes care guides for exotic and unusual pets, covering reptiles, birds, small mammals, amphibians and invertebrates. The aim is narrow and practical: help someone understand what a species actually needs, ideally before they bring one home, and give them something useful to read when a problem appears afterwards.
Most of what circulates about exotic pets is either a caresheet copied from another caresheet, or an argument in a forum thread from nine years ago. A surprising amount of it is wrong in ways that matter, particularly around heating, humidity and diet. We try to write the version we would want to find.
Who writes it
Three writers cover the site, split by the animals they spend the most time with, and every guide carries the name of whoever wrote it. You can see who covers what on the writers page. We put names on guides because advice about a living animal should come from someone identifiable rather than from an anonymous house byline.
How the guides are produced
Guides are written to editorial rules that prohibit presenting unverifiable specifics as confirmed fact, and each one is checked by the writer whose name appears on it before it goes out. Where the available sources disagree about a care requirement, we say so instead of picking whichever answer reads most cleanly. Our editorial policy sets out the whole process, and the disclaimer sets out the limits of what any written guide can tell you about your own animal.
Nothing here is veterinary advice, and no guide can examine your animal. Anything health related belongs with a veterinarian experienced in exotic species.
How the site is funded
Advertising pays for the hosting. We do not sell readers' data, we are not paid to recommend any product, breeder, retailer or veterinary practice, and an advertisement appearing on a page is not an endorsement of it. We are independent of every business that may be mentioned or implied anywhere on this site.

If something here is wrong, or has stopped being current, that is the most useful message you can send us. Tell us the page and what you believe is inaccurate at [email protected], or through the contact page, and we will look at it and correct it where you are right.
