Delay is the main reason treatable conditions in reptiles, birds and small mammals become serious ones, because these animals hide illness until it is advanced.

Every animal is different

General care information cannot account for an individual animal's age, health history, temperament or the conditions it came from. Two animals of the same species can need noticeably different handling. Treat any figure here, whether a temperature range, a feeding interval or an enclosure size, as a starting point to discuss rather than a rule that overrides what you can see in front of you.

Local law is your responsibility

Which species may legally be kept, sold or transported varies by country, state and sometimes by city, and those rules change. Some animals covered in these guides are restricted or prohibited in places where others keep them freely. Check the regulations that apply where you live before acquiring any animal.
